England football news

Tottenham have announced the signing of James Maddison from Leicester.

Spurs entered high-level negotiations with recently relegated Leicester earlier this week to finalize a deal for the England international.

Maddison's acquisition costs will initially cost the North London club £40m plus a surcharge.

Signing the 26-year-old would be a big deal for Spurs and View manager Anju Postecoglou.

Maddison has had 55 goals and 41 assists in 203 appearances in a very successful five years at Leicester, who won the 2021 FA Cup. Maddison was unable to prevent Leicester's sudden relegation to the championship last season, but he was still able to score in double figures.

Newcastle had expressed interest in bringing the midfielder to St James Park but opted for the move of AC Milan's Sandro Tonali, leaving the door open for Tottenham to embark on their main objective. Becam

Arsenal are on the verge of completing a deal for Declan Rice.

West Ham have given permission for RIce to have a medical at Arsenal after they table an offer worth up to £105million bid.

The structure of the payments are still being discussed, but are expected to be resolved soon.

Subject to a successful medical, Rice will become the most expensive British signing in history.

Man City had also made an offer for the 24-year-old, worth around £90m.

But the Premier League champions dropped their interest after the bid was rejected by West Ham.

Rice has always been keen on staying in London and moving to Arsenal.

Sealing his signature will complete a fine few days for Mikel Arteta, having signed Kai Havertz from Chelsea earlier on Wednesday.

Havertz has joined for a fee of around £65m.

He told Arsenal’s club media: “It’s super exciting for me to be joining this amazing club and to be part of the Arsenal family. This club has such a big history, and I hope we can achieve lots of things.

“The mentality in the Arsenal squad is very high and you can feel that. That was one of the reasons why it has been so hard to play against Arsenal recently.

“The aim is to win trophies and I’m going to give everything to do that for the supporters and everyone at the club. I’m now looking forward to meeting all the players and the staff when we come back for pre-season.”

Roma head coach Jose Mourinho has been hit with a 10-day suspension for the start of the Serie A season over comments he made about a referee.

Mourinho has been sanctioned by the national federal court of Italy’s football federation, the FIGC, after describing official Daniele Chiffi as ‘the worst referee (he) had ever seen’ after Roma’s match against Monza on May 3.

The Portuguese, who has also managed Chelsea, Manchester United and Tottenham, will not be allowed to appear on the touchline or in the club’s dressing room on matchdays during the first 10 days of the new domestic campaign.

He has also been fined €50,000 (just over £43,000).

Last week Mourinho was banned for four matches by UEFA for abusing English referee Anthony Taylor at the Europa League final on May 31.

Chelsea have confirmed the departure of Edouard Mendy.

Chelsea news

The goalkeeper has left Stamford Bridge after three seasons and completed a permanent transfer to Saudi Professional League side Al-Ahli.

The 31-year-old Senegal international will be best remembered for the key role he played in the Blues’ run to Champions League glory in 2021.

Mendy conceded just twice in seven knockout matches and registered nine Champions League clean sheets in 2020/21, a feat achieved by no other goalkeeper in their debut season in Europe’s elite club competition.

Those performances saw Mendy named UEFA Champions League Goalkeeper of the Season, The Best FIFA Men’s Goalkeeper, and helped him to second place in the voting for the Yashin Trophy, an award that recognises the game’s top stoppers – becoming only the second goalkeeper in Chelsea history to be shortlisted for that honour.

“A hugely likeable character on and off the pitch, Edouard will always have a place in our history for his significant contributions to our 2021 Champions League triumph,” a Chelsea statement read.

“For that, and for everything else, we are grateful. Good luck, Edou!”
