MANCHESTER UNITED FOUNDATION: THANK YOU SIR BOBY by Nathan Thomas on October 26, 2023 10:00 AM Share on Twitter Share on Facebook Share on WhatsApp The passing of the great Sir Bobby Charlton CBE was a moment that moved the world of football.

Regardless of your allegiance, it was impossible not to be inspired by a man who repeatedly defied immortality in the beautiful game, but always did so with grace and humility.

Sir Bobby will always be remembered for his work on the pitch, but we want to recognize his humanitarian commitment off the pitch - and especially his strong support for our own community work.
The Manchester United Foundation was established in 2007 as a lasting legacy of the ambition of the Busby Babes. Young lads, all from humble beginnings, who carved their names into the football and history books with the support of the club, Sir Matt Busby and Jimmy Murphy.

This ethos has been transferred into our own work, using the power of United to inspire young people to be the best they can be.

One of those fabled Busby Babes was, of course, Bobby Charlton, arguably the best player to ever wear the famous red shirt. The Munich air crash survivor who won the World Championship and the European Cup was not only synonymous with success but more importantly the epitome of resilience and courage - a perfect role model for our youth. Sir Bobby opened a new building for the foundation's partner school in Wythenshawe in 2010.

We were therefore truly blessed that Sir Bobby and his wife Lady Norma, who is a constant source of support for her husband, were generous enough with their time to contribute to a number of foundations Procedures; whether it's a grand unveiling of a new project or partner school or simply spreading the magic of Manchester United. In 2010 we hosted our first launch event with partner school Manchester Enterprise Academy in Wythenshawe.

Sir Bobby attended and organized an impromptu penalty shoot-out which would become a popular feature at school partnership events for many years to come. As the foundation grew, so did Sir Bobby's support

“The foundation is hugely successful in the work it does in the community – it's just spectacular,” Sir Bobby commented in 201 . “I'm always amazed at the imagination and intelligence of  children and the foundation can help develop them. - During all the years I spent at Manchester United, our philosophy was to try to do things right. In my experience, you can remember really great achievements when you do that - that's what we try to instill in young people."
